Vietnam is set to build a 135,000-seater stadium, with costs estimated at around 925 trillion dong (RM150 billion)
According to Berita Harian, the Hanoi government approved the Trong Dong stadium plans in December 2025 as the centrepiece of the Olympic Sports City project.
The development includes residential and sporting zones. Authorities envision the venue as a hub for international sports, culture, and socio-political events.

Vietnam aims to elevate its global standing by building the iconic venue
The stadium's architecture draws inspiration from the Dong Son bronze drum, a symbol of ancient Vietnamese civilisation representing community, strength, and resilience. The design blends traditional heritage with futuristic facilities.
Organisers cited Wembley, the Bird's Nest, and Lusail stadium as blueprints for how infrastructure can boost national prestige.

Once completed, Vietnam's stadium will surpass North Korea's Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, which holds 114,000 people
It will also dwarf Morocco's Hassan II stadium, under construction with a 115,000-seat capacity. The project website highlights the need for international-standard facilities as Vietnam hopes to host major tournaments.
"Hanoi has a responsibility to lead the establishment of national sports institutions," the statement read. The stadium is expected to feature the world's largest retractable roof and uses energy-saving technology.
The infrastructure is intended to underpin future World Cup and Olympic bids. Construction is scheduled for completion in 2028, while the wider Olympic Sports City project is expected to be fully operational by 2035.
