A Penang member of parliament has brought to light the story of a veteran coach who dedicated years to training Malaysian para-athletes but is now without a permanent home
In a Facebook post yesterday, 1 April, Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid shared that she recently visited Narayanasamy Doraisamy, a semi-retired coach currently staying at an assisted living care centre.
She said when she first met him, he was living alone in a small rented room in Kampung Sireh, Kedah.
"It wasn't much — just four walls, a bed, and a man with an extraordinary heart," she wrote.
Describing him as someone who quietly devoted his life to helping para-athletes succeed, she said he never complained about his situation despite his hardships.
"Some people don't just live their lives — they dedicate it to lifting others. No complaints. No self-pity. Just quiet strength and a deep love for the athletes he once guided," she said.

Although Narayanasamy has since been moved to the assisted living facility, Syerleena said the arrangement is only temporary
During her recent visit, Syerleena said she could not help but reflect and feel the weight of Narayanasamy's journey, despite the role he played in many athlete's achievements.
"A man who gave so much of himself to others… now searching for a place he can finally call home.
"It makes you pause. Because behind every medal won by a para-athlete, behind every success story we celebrate — there are people like Narayanasamy. The ones who stay in the background. The ones who build others up, quietly, without ever asking for anything in return.
"And yet, when the cheering fades, who takes care of them?" she asked.

Syerleena added that she and her team are now working to help him secure a permanent home
She said it was important to help Narayanasamy find a permanent home so he can age with dignity.
"Because a man who helped others stand tall should never have to face life alone," she said.
