The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has nominated Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as its next president

According to the New Straits Times, BAM interim president Datuk V Subramaniam said council members have reached a consensus to name the Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister as the successor to former president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria.

"The majority of the council have expressed their support for Tengku Zafrul to become the next president.

"With BAM's best interests in mind, we believe Tengku Zafrul is the right man for the job.

"We will wait for the annual general meeting (AGM) and see if there are any other names nominated," said Subramaniam.

The association's AGM is set to convene on 10 May.

In a tweet today, 25 March, Tengku Zafrul thanked the association for its confidence in him and agreed to be nominated for the top job

This is not the first time the senator has been mentioned as the next BAM president.

Before former president Tan Sri Norza Zakaria announced his plans to step down in 2023, Tengku Zafrul had been proposed to lead the association.

The minister was initially expected to take over early last year, but Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh convinced Norza to stay on until the Paris Olympics.

The New Straits Times reported that ministers are prohibited from holding posts in national sports associations.

However, it is understood that Tengku Zafrul could step down as trade minister before his senatorship expires in December 2025. Only an elected representative in the Dewan Rakyat or a member of the Dewan Negara can become a minister.

In an interview with Sin Chew Daily in 2022, Tengku Zafrul said he would look for a new job after his ministership ended.
