There is a possibility that US President Donald Trump may attend the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October

According to the New Straits Times, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the possibility during a media briefing at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting, held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 8 to 11 July.

"It's possible, yes," he said when asked about Trump's potential attendance.

"We are working on a date for that," he added, referring to the proposed ASEAN–US Special Summit.

Rubio arrived in Malaysia on Thursday, 10 July, to participate in the ASEAN meetings and was welcomed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan

He also met with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who described their discussions as "beneficial".

Anwar cited the US' willingness to review trade tariffs and strengthen ties with both Malaysia and the broader ASEAN region.

The prime minister also extended a formal invitation to Trump, through Rubio, to attend the upcoming summit in October.

Rubio's visit follows Trump's recent announcement of new tariffs and is seen as part of Washington's effort to reaffirm its foreign policy priorities in Asia.
