Drivers from Singapore hoping to fuel up with unsubsidised RON95 next month are being reminded that they are still only allowed to buy RON97
Foreign-registered vehicles, including those from Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia, are strictly barred from buying RON95 in Malaysia, even though the unsubsidised version of this petrol will now be available for foreigners with Malaysia-registered vehicles.
"[Foreign-registered vehicles] can only purchase RON97 in accordance with existing regulations," Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said at a press conference yesterday, 23 September.
Earlier, there were celebrations among Singaporeans when some reports suggested that foreigners could soon buy RON95 at market price, estimated to be around RM2.60 per litre
On social media, Singaporeans expressed their excitement following the announcement of the government's new BUDI95 initiative, with comments like "Wowww we can pump RON95 at RM2.60", "Cheap until cannot believe", and "Time to drive in and fill a full tank every week!".
At RM2.60, the unsubsidised price of RON95 is still a fraction of the RM10 per litre Singaporeans typically pay back home.
Under the BUDI95 scheme, only Malaysian citizens aged 16 and above with a valid driving licence and MyKad are eligible to buy RON95 at the new subsidised rate of RM1.99 per litre.
Foreign residents living and working in Malaysia who drive Malaysian-registered vehicles can still purchase RON95, but only at the market price, which will be determined at the end of the month.
