A video showing a man in a batik shirt has gone viral after he politely confronted a Singaporean driver who was pumping subsidised RON95 at a petrol station in Johor Bahru

The 53-second video, widely shared online, shows the man approaching the Singapore-registered car and reminding the driver that RON95 is strictly for Malaysia-registered vehicles.

The calm but firm exchange — which took place without any provocation or heated words — drew praise online, with many lauding his composure.

"I like how he handled it — polite but firm," one Facebook user commented.

"If more people were brave like him, foreigners wouldn't misuse our subsidies so easily," another user wrote.

Meanwhile, an X user called him a wira, or hero.

The incident occurred on 26 August.

Some netizens also turned their attention to enforcement, saying petrol station workers should be more vigilant

One commenter stressed that stations risk a RM10,000 compound if they allow foreign vehicles to pump RON95, while the Customs Department can fine foreign vehicles the same amount if they are caught leaving the country with subsidised fuel.

Others were less restrained, mocking the situation with remarks like, "RON97 is just 99 cents, [expletive]".

Meanwhile, one Reddit user suggested a simple solution.

"For anyone who encounters such behaviour, you can just press the Stop button at petrol kiosks and inform the counter."
