The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has recorded statements from three social media content creators over a viral video showing them handing food scraps to a homeless man

The commission, in a statement yesterday, 5 August, said the video was deemed extremely offensive and had sparked widespread outrage online.

MCMC added that the issue also touched on sensitivities within Malaysia's diverse community.

"Investigations are being carried out under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a maximum fine of RM500,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, or both," it said.

MCMC said the statements were recorded and further investigations conducted yesterday at the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters in Johor

A total of three smartphones and three SIM cards were seized to facilitate investigations.

MCMC said it will also continue to strengthen the implementation of its digital literacy initiatives through its Safe Internet Campaign to shape a digital-savvy, ethical, and responsible society.

"This initiative aims to foster a culture of creating prudent, ethical, and civilised content, in addition to raising awareness towards good values in the country's digital ecosystem," it said.

Over the weekend, an Instagram video went viral showing three people eating fried chicken at a fast food outlet before handing the leftovers and bones to a homeless man

After coming under fire, the video was taken down, and the content creators uploaded another video apologising for the incident.

They claimed that it was just a stunt and that they had given the homeless man a full meal after recording the video.
