Donald Trump To Come To Malaysia For ASEAN Summit

PM Anwar also said the new US tariff rate on Malaysian goods will be announced tomorrow, 1 August.

US President Donald Trump will attend the 2025 ASEAN Summit in October, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced today, 31 July

Speaking at the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar said he received a phone call from Trump at 6.50am today, during which Trump confirmed he will attend the summit in October.

"President Donald Trump confirmed that he will attend the 2025 ASEAN Summit.

"I told him I would announce his attendance in parliament today," he said before tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Trump might visit Kuala Lumpur for the proposed ASEAN–US Special Summit in October.

Anwar also revealed that a new US tariff rate for Malaysia will be announced tomorrow, 1 August, the extended deadline set by Trump after the original date of 9 July

"We also discussed the issue of tariffs in the spirit and principle of free trade.

"He decided to postpone the announcement until tomorrow, and we pray, it will help and not burden our country's economy," said the prime minister.

On 7 July, the US imposed a 25% tariff on Malaysian goods. Anwar later said Malaysia had a few weeks to negotiate the rate.

During the call, Trump also expressed his appreciation to Malaysia for its effective role in helping resolve the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

Anwar credited the achievement to ASEAN's collective efforts, the constructive approach of both Thailand and Cambodia, and the support of the US, particularly Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
