5th Earthquake Strikes Johor At 4AM This Friday Morning

A 2.5-magnitude earthquake was also detected at 7.56pm last night, 28 August.

A minor earthquake struck Johor at 4.24am today, 29 August, with tremors felt across the state

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia), the 3.4-magnitude quake was recorded 22km northeast of Segamat.

This marks the fifth earthquake to occur in Johor within a week. Last night, 28 August, a 2.5-magnitude earthquake was also detected 13km north of Segamat at 7.56pm.

In a statement following last night's tremor, METMalaysia assured that there was no cause for concern.

"The public need not be alarmed because the earthquake that occurred was of weak magnitude," it said.

METMalaysia explained that the quakes struck within the Mersing Fault Zone, an area prone to seismic activity

The department added that it will continue to monitor the situation.

According to the New Straits Times, the recent tremors have not caused any major damage, but have raised awareness about the region's susceptibility to seismic events.

Here are the earthquakes that have struck Johor in the past week:

– 24 August, 6.13am: 4.1 magnitude, 5km west of Segamat

– 24 August, 9.00am: 2.8 magnitude, 28km northwest of Kluang

– 27 August, 8.59am: 3.2 magnitude, 18km south of Segamat

– 28 August, 7.56pm: 2.5 magnitude, 13km north of Segamat

– 29 August, 4.24am: 3.4 magnitude, 22km northeast of Segamat
