1. The Zhongshan Building

Zhongshan is a creative rabbit hole hiding behind a quiet facade. Tucked inside an unassuming row of shophouses along Jalan Kampung Attap, it's the kind of place you stumble into and accidentally lose half a day.
Inside, you'll find a local stationery shop, a homegrown skincare store, a vinyl nook, and a couple of cosy cafés. Just behind it are Kantata and Triptyk, two intimate café-bars that are perfect for escaping to in the evenings or on weekend nights, especially when there are DJs spinning.
It's a slower, more laid-back vibe compared to the chaos of KL, and honestly, that's the charm.

2. Kwai Chai Hong

If you're in the heart of KL, don't miss this little alleyway, located within walking distance from Petaling Street. The colourful murals and lanterns, the old Chinese signage, the moody alley lights. But Kwai Chai Hong is more than a photogenic spot.
This once-neglected laneway has been beautifully restored to tell the stories of early Chinese immigrants in KL's Chinatown. There are QR codes you can scan to hear the tales behind the murals, and the art installations rotate often enough to keep it fresh. Come at night for the lights and stay for the bars and restaurants nearby.

3. REXKL

Once an iconic cinema, REXKL has been reborn as a creative powerhouse. On the lowest floor, you'll find a food court, natural wine bar, pizza parlour, bicycle store, and more; upstairs, there's a massive bookstore, event space, and rooftop bar. It's part community hub, part art space, all housed within a beautifully raw, industrial shell.
At its heart is BookXcess, a local bookstore that has taken over the old cinema hall with floor-to-ceiling shelves and dreamy lighting.
Surrounding it are ever-changing pop-up stores, indie food stalls, workshops, and events. REXKL feels alive in the best possible way, whether you're there to eat, shop, or simply soak in the creative energy. Keep an eye out for little nods to the cinema it once was.

4. Petaling Street / Chinatown

While it's not exactly underrated, Petaling Street is full of hidden nooks waiting to be explored. The OG stalls selling souvenirs and street food are still around, but walk a bit further or duck into one of the back lanes and there's a whole underlayer of new-school energy.
You'll find speakeasies tucked away on the upper floors, indie cafés, cocktail bars, and hole-in-the-wall eateries that serve authentic modern Malaysian food.
The mix of old and new is what makes it magical and fun to explore!

The atmosphere is calm, perfect for discovering local illustrators, niche fashion, or just taking in some visual inspiration.

It's also fully air-conditioned — bless — and connected to the LRT. Skip the tourist traps and head upstairs for galleries and exhibitions you didn't know were there. Also, look out for weekend markets every month.

9. The Gasket Alley

Part industrial space, part lifestyle concept, The Gasket Alley is one of those rare spots where culture kids actually want to hang out.
Tucked near PJ's Section 13, this gritty-cool enclave is not massive, but it does have several solid spots to chill at if you're after laidback vibes. It gives "KL Brooklyn", with concrete floors, exposed pipes, and curated chaos.
Some of the spots here include Coffeeboy Club, which often hosts DJs on weekends (very chill, very vibes), Halo Doughnuts, Hejau, a photo booth, and The Good Stuff, if you're in the mood to grab a bottle of wine.
You'll also find local streetwear brands like FTMD. and Jonnie's Bodega. On some weekends, swing by The Jam just behind Gasket Alley for thrift markets and other pop-up events.

You'll also find the Qra's flagship grocery store, local lifestyle brands like Kapten Batik, Apom, and NALA, plus wellness spots, a kids' playland, and even a basketball court.
On some weekends, the space transforms into creative markets and events, making it a laid-back, community-driven hangout for locals and KL's artsy crowd.
