Tucked away in Subang Jaya, Exotic and Small Animals Medical Centre is a dedicated veterinary clinic that specialises in treating exotic pets and small animal companions

According to their website, the clinic is staffed by a passionate team of veterinarians and trained professionals who provide expert medical, surgical, and preventive care tailored to species like rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds, and more.

Whether it's a routine check-up, grooming session, or a sudden health concern, this clinic is equipped to offer support to animals often overlooked in traditional veterinary settings.

Speaking to SAYS, the clinic shared that it officially opened its doors in July 2024, though its roots go back even further — starting out as a mobile veterinary service

"Back then, we traveled from one petting zoo to another, treating a wide variety of animals, including exotic species.

"It was during this time we realised the limitations of relying on external labs for diagnostics like X-rays and blood work. The delays often impacted the efficiency of our care," they said.

These early experiences inspired them to open a permanent facility, allowing them to offer more comprehensive and immediate care to exotic pets.

Today, the clinic is home to four veterinarians, each with expertise in the care of unique species — from birds, sugar gliders, and guinea pigs to hamsters, geckos, and bearded dragons

"We were driven by the need to provide proper care for exotic animals, many of which are often underserved. We believe that every animal, no matter the species, deserves access to quality veterinary care," the clinic explained.

Exotic animals often have highly specialised needs — from their diets and habitats to the medical treatments they require — which differ significantly from common household pets like cats or dogs.

"Treating exotic animals requires a deeper understanding of their individual anatomy, physiology, and natural behaviour. It's a rewarding challenge that keeps us continuously learning," they said.

Each group presents its own set of challenges. Reptiles, for example, tend to hide signs of illness, making early diagnosis difficult. Meanwhile, birds are especially sensitive to stress, while rodents are fast-moving and require careful, gentle handling.

The clinic also issued an important reminder: Exotic pets require specialised care, suitable living environments, and species-appropriate diets

They strongly encourage that Malaysians do thorough research using reliable sources before deciding to bring an exotic pet home.

"It's vital to understand their needs, including proper husbandry, diet, and behaviour. Exotic pets can also have long lifespans and require more commitment than most people expect," they said.

If your pet needs professional help, their services include:
– Veterinary care for exotic & small animals
– Medical diagnostics, treatments, and surgery
– Grooming and pet hotel services
– Compassionate and knowledgeable care tailored to your pet's unique needs
