Move over, oyen and capybaras. Apoh the chonky black panther is Zoo Negara's latest celebrity!

After making waves for his plump appearance on TikTok last week, Harian Metro reported that people are now visiting the zoo to catch a glimpse of the big cat.

However, for Zoo Negara staff, Apoh has long been a star.

"Apoh is one of the main attractions at Zoo Negara — not just among local visitors, but also international tourists.

"Some even come specifically to see him sunbathe," said Ahmad Nizam Zainudin, Director of Zoology, Hospital, and Veterinary Services at the zoo.

Ahmad Nizam also shared that Apoh has been part of Zoo Negara for the past 15 years, after being handed over as a cub

His name, fittingly, comes from Merapoh, Pahang — his place of origin.

"We estimate he's around 15 years old, the same number of years he's been with us. In the wild, black panthers typically live 10 to 12 years, but under close veterinary care, they can live beyond 20," he shared.

He added that, despite his age, Apoh remains active.

"Apoh still climbs. Sometimes he's up in the trees, sometimes sitting on rocks, but his physical strength isn't what it used to be," he noted.

He added that Apoh is fed 2.5kg of food daily, including 500g of meat, and 2kg of chicken, along with supplements, multivitamins, and medication to keep him healthy.

"Veterinarians monitor Apoh's health daily, while his caretakers report any changes in behaviour or condition," said Ahmad Nizam.

The timing for Apoh's newfound fame couldn't be more perfect — the big cat just turned 15 — the same week he went viral!

"Looks like our black panther Apoh grabbed the spotlight at just the right moment — today is his 15th birthday!" Zoo Negara posted on social media on 15 July.

"Yes, Apoh is looking a little chonky — but don't worry! Our dedicated zookeepers and vets are keeping a close eye on him and making sure he gets the best care possible.

"We truly appreciate all your concern and support in helping our animals stay healthy. Long live Apoh!" they assured.
