WhatsApp has introduced several updates to make group chats simpler and more convenient, especially for those who rely on them daily to stay in touch with family and friends

The 7 January 2026 updates aim to help people communicate more clearly in busy group chats, which many Malaysians already use to plan events, share updates, or coordinate daily activities.

One of the new features is member tags, which allow users to label themselves differently in each group they are part of

For example, someone can appear as "Aisyah's Mum" in a family group and "Treasurer" in a residents' association chat.

This makes it easier for others in the group to know who someone is and what their role might be, particularly in larger groups where not everyone has saved each other's phone numbers.

WhatsApp also introduced text stickers, which let users turn words into stickers

This makes certain messages stand out more in fast-moving group chats, so important reminders or announcements get noticed without needing repeated messages.

Another update is event reminders in group chats. When users create an event in a group, they can now set early reminders for everyone invited.

This feature is designed to help people remember upcoming plans, whether it's a family gathering or an online call, and reduce last-minute confusion.

These new features build on earlier improvements WhatsApp has made to group chats over the years, such as sharing large files of up to 2GB.

According to WhatsApp, these updates aim to make group conversations feel more organised and comfortable to use.

For users who depend on WhatsApp to manage daily conversations, the latest changes are intended to make group chats smoother and easier to keep up with.
