Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) has officially expanded its local line-up with the introduction of the sixth-generation (C28) Nissan Serena e-Power

This latest iteration of the popular multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) arrives as a locally assembled (CKD) model, marking a significant technological shift for the nameplate in the Malaysian market.

Moving away from the previous mild-hybrid setup, the new C28 adopts a full series-hybrid system, offering five distinct variants to cater to different family needs

The entry-level Nissan Serena e-Power X is priced at RM154,800, followed by the X Plus at RM159,800.

For those seeking more styling and features, the Highway Star is available at RM169,800, while the Premium Highway Star retails for RM174,800.

The range is topped by the Shiro Premium Highway Star at RM179,800. All prices are quoted on-the-road, excluding insurance.

The exterior receives a whole new design language

The C28 generation embraces Nissan's current V-Motion Shield design language, giving the MPV a more contemporary presence while retaining the vertical silhouette familiar to fans of the outgoing C27.

In terms of dimensions, the new model measures 4,765mm in length and 1,715mm in width, making it slightly shorter and narrower than its predecessor. However, it stands 5mm taller at 1,870mm and benefits from a 10mm extension to its wheelbase, which now spans 2,870mm.

A signature element that remains is the two-tiered tailgate, providing convenient access in tight parking spaces.

The rear is further distinguished by a revised light signature and prominent "SERENA" and "e-POWER" branding.

Depending on the variant, exterior highlights include 16-inch alloy wheels, tri-beam LED projector headlamps with auto-levelling, and hands-free powered sliding doors.

The higher-tier Highway Star variants gain sportier bumpers, an acoustic front windscreen, and a powered tailgate.

The futuristic e-POWER system drives the new Serena

At the heart of the C28 is the second-generation e-Power system. Unlike conventional hybrids where both the engine and motor drive the wheels, this system uses a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine solely as a generator. This engine produces 98hp and 123Nm of torque to charge a 1.77kWh battery, which then feeds a front-mounted electric motor.

The electric motor is the sole source of propulsion, delivering a robust 163 hp and 315Nm of torque.

This configuration provides a driving experience similar to a pure electric vehicle, characterised by instant torque and smooth acceleration.

Nissan claims a fuel efficiency of 18.5km/L under the NEDC cycle, potentially allowing for a total range of up to 1,000km on a single tank.

The inside is equally impressive as the outside

The interior is designed as a seven-seater with a 2+2+3 layout, featuring Zero Gravity captain seats in the first two rows to enhance long-distance comfort.

The cabin is highly modular, offering 13 seating configurations and up to 26 storage points. Standard tech includes a seven-inch digital cluster and a nine-inch touchscreen on base models, while the Highway Star variants upgrade to dual 12.3-inch displays with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Safety is another key feature highlighted by Nissan

The X and X Plus variants come with six airbags and a reverse camera as standard.

The Highway Star and higher versions are equipped with the full Nissan ProPILOT suite. This includes Autonomous Emergency Braking, Intelligent Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, and a 360-degree surround-view monitor with Moving Object Detection.

Ownership is supported by a five-year or 100,000km vehicle warranty. The e-Power specific components — including the battery and motor — are covered by an eight-year or 160,000km warranty.
