Being an electric vehicle (EV) owner in Malaysia comes with some pretty sweet perks this tax filing season

If you've ditched the petrol station for a home charger, the government is essentially rewarding you for going green.

Whether you're already a proud EV owner or you're currently eyeing one, here is everything you need to know about claiming your tax relief for the 2025 Year of Assessment (filing in 2026).

Under the current budget, taxpayers can claim a special relief of up to RM2,500 for expenses related to EV charging

According to LHDN, here's what EV users can claim:

  • Buying a home charger: If you purchased a wallbox for your garage.
  • Installation costs: The fee you paid the technician to set it all up.
  • Rental/Hire-purchase: If you are paying monthly for your charging equipment.
  • Charging subscriptions: Paid for a monthly plan at public charging stations? You can claim those fees too.

This relief has been extended until the 2027 Year of Assessment. As long as you follow these best practices below, you'll be able to claim up to RM2,500.

LHDN requires you to keep your receipts for up to seven years. Digital receipts from charging apps count, but make sure you download and save them in a dedicated folder.

When filling out your e-filing, look for the section for electric car charging facility.

Also, avoid over-claiming as the cap is RM2,500. Even if your solar-powered charger cost RM5,000, you can only claim RM2,500.
