Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that the proposed Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Bill is in its early stages
Speaking at Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today, 24 February, Anwar explained that the legislation aims to tackle ethical issues and ensure accountability.
The bill is expected to undergo further consultations with the Parliamentary Special Committee to refine its scope.
He noted that this initiative is significant as it represents a fresh approach for Malaysia and many other nations globally.
"The bill will also elaborate on accountability and ethical issues in AI usage, involving developers and deployers of AI systems," he said.

The prime minister added that the framework will cover the entire lifecycle of an AI system, including training, monitoring, and risk management
Responding to a query from Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang) regarding copyright, Anwar emphasised that existing laws like the Copyright Act 1987 still apply.
He stated that the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has been tasked with monitoring compliance more effectively.

Anwar highlighted that Malaysia's approach will place a heavy emphasis on moral considerations
"I think the drafters will give this special attention, which differs from the approach taken in the West, where legal details are followed but ethical and moral considerations are often not prioritised," he added, according to the New Straits Times.
Anwar also revealed that the Malaysian government is tightening approvals for data centres to protect the nation's electricity and water supplies.
