Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu distributed locally-grown avocados to members of parliament, staff members, and reporters yesterday, 29 July

In a Facebook post, Mohamad showed off a large avocado to the press.

Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin and Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong also held up large, bright green avocados during a photo op.

Mohamad said the distribution was part of the Eat More Local Fruits and Vegetables campaign, aimed at promoting healthy eating and supporting local farmers and entrepreneurs.

"The avocados I distributed today are the hard-earned produce of our local talents from Borneocado. The quality is excellent — on par with imported fruit. This proves that our land is fertile and our farmers are skilled.

"Keep supporting local fruits. Eat healthy, support our farmers!" he wrote in the post.

Malaysiakini reported that 300 avocados were given out yesterday.

Tawau Municipal Council member Philip Yap Wui Lip said the avocados distributed were of the Quion Hill Avocado Variety (QAV1)

He explained that the variety was developed over 10 years by the Quion Hill Agricultural Research Station under the supervision of the Sabah Agriculture Department.

"This variety not only yields high output but also boasts premium qualities such as thick flesh, a small seed, creamy texture, and sweet taste.

"A single ripe fruit weighs about 500g, and a mature tree can produce up to 200 fruits per season," he said.

Yap expressed hope that the QAV1 produce will become Tawau's signature fruit one day, not only gaining popularity in Peninsular Malaysia but also making its mark in international markets.

Last month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim thanked Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Arthur Joseph Kurup on X for gifting him a basket of Sabah-grown avocados

The post came less than two weeks after Anwar said imported food items such as avocados and cod fish were generally purchased by the wealthy.

"If the rich want to eat avocados, then they will need to pay a little more," he said on 15 June, reported FMT.
