When Kay and Don tied the knot on October 25, it was a defining romantic moment that sealed an epic love story which began 10 years ago on MapleStorySEA
"Every detail was intentional. We wanted to celebrate the world where we met and where our story began," Kay said.
MapleStory-themed gift bags, colourful standees of in-game characters, and décor inspired by familiar maps from Maple World were only a handful of things that the couple included as a tribute to the game that drew them together.
It all began in 2014 when Kay reinstalled MapleStorySEA after a few years away
A friend suggested joining a guild to make levelling easier, and that was how she met Don, a friendly player who was always helping others (and who'd also been playing a female character).
What began as quick chats during quests turned into nightly training sessions and long conversations about life beyond the game.
Their bond grew naturally through teamwork and laughter. Soon, Kay realised she was logging in not for the quests, but for the company.
When the quests started to feel a little overwhelming, Kay and Don would retreat to familiar in-game hangouts just to chill
"We'd hang out in the same spots almost every night," she said, remembering in-game areas such as the Leafre grocer or the ruins in Henesys.
"We'd chat about everything. Work, food, family, random stuff. Those moments became the highlight of my day," she added.
For both of them, MapleStorySEA transformed from just a game into a space where genuine friendship and connection could grow.
One day, Kay decided to ask Don for her real number, which was when things took a surprising turn
"Turns out, Don was actually a guy living in Singapore. But he had been playing a female character all along!"
While most of their guildmates still assumed Don to be a girl, Kay continued to keep his secret.
"I was shocked, but it didn't change anything and I quickly accepted it," she said.
Soon after, the two decided to meet in person for a mutual friend's birthday party at Sunway Lagoon, which happened to be the very first time they met IRL.
"It was our first real-life meet-up," she said. "But even though we'd grown close, we still saw each other as friends."
Eventually, it was a playful comment that kicked things off
It happened during one of their usual hangouts when Kay half-jokingly said: "How nice if you were my boyfriend."
Without missing a beat, Don replied: "Why not? Let's give it a try."
That simple, playful exchange marked the start of something real, and transformed a random decision to play a game into one of the biggest moments of Kay's life.
When planning their wedding, Kay and Don knew MapleStorySEA had to be part of it
They transformed their wedding venue to resemble familiar spots from the game, complete with lighting and details that long-time players would recognise.
Guests took photos beside life-sized standees of characters, and each table had themed gift bags waiting to be opened.
"We wanted to show our guests how it all began with MapleStory," Kay said.
"MapleStorySEA has always been about friendships and relationships that grow through shared adventures."
Their wedding was a reminder that even in a virtual world, real bonds can last a lifetime.
Today, Kay and Don are still actively "mapling", going on new adventures and hanging out at their chill-out spots once in a while
For them, MapleStorySEA is more than a nostalgic game. It's the place that shaped their friendship, sparked their love, and gave them memories they'll keep for life.
Every time they enter Maple World, it feels like coming home to the start of something special.
