A man in China has taken frugality to a new level, saving an impressive 1.3 million yuan (RM772,000) in just six years by keeping his meal expenses to a minimum

The 29-year-old, known by his online alias "Little Grass Drifting North", works as a live-stream host for a large Internet company in Beijing.

According to South China Morning Post, he revealed that his monthly food expenses are kept under 500 yuan (RM297), with each home-cooked meal costing him less than one US dollar (approximately RM4.30).

His only major expense is his monthly rent of around 2,500 yuan (RM1,484). This disciplined approach to spending began right after he graduated from university.

The man shared that a traumatic event from his childhood was the driving force behind his extreme saving habits

He explained to Jiupai News that his mother became seriously ill when he was in Primary Five, pushing his family into debt as they struggled to afford her medical treatment.

"That experience made me realise how essential it [money] is – especially in difficult times. Without it, you're powerless," he said.

This instilled in him a deep-seated need for financial security, motivating him to save diligently so he would never have to rely on others in an emergency.

He now hopes to buy a house for his parents

Despite his intense lifestyle, he clarified that he is not stingy, having taken company-sponsored trips. However, he admitted that his health has been affected, and he is now more willing to invest in his and his parents' wellbeing.

His ultimate goal is to save 2 million yuan (RM1.18 million) to purchase a flat and a car.

"I want my parents to live in a home that I purchased, and when I have the time, I'll take them on trips," he shared, adding that he hopes to get married and start his own family one day.
