A 54-year-old Japanese man has sold his luxury sports car and closed his company to establish a free shelter for "problematic dogs"

According to The Asahi Shimbun, this extraordinary act of kindness comes after his own dog prevented him from taking his life.

Hirotaka Saito, head of the Wansfree canine rescue centre in Yaizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, cares for difficult dogs often deemed unmanageable by other animal lovers.

These animals, frequently victims of abuse, tend to bite and snarl indiscriminately.

Saito's life took a dramatic turn around 12 years ago when his company faced severe financial difficulties

Overwhelmed, he contemplated suicide, but his 70kg pet dog physically blocked his exit, preventing him from carrying out his plan.

Moved by his dog's actions, Saito abandoned his suicidal thoughts and dedicated his life to rescuing dogs who bite people – a then-uncommon activity in Japan.

"When I realised that I was saved by a dog, I believed that what I could do is save dogs for the rest of my life," he said.

He further declared his commitment, stating, "I will spend all my money on dogs."

Saito sold his Ferrari to acquire land and open the Wansfree shelter, allowing dogs to roam freely without heavy chain leashes

His goal is simple: "I want to let them know that they are loved."

Despite sustaining bites, even while wearing three pairs of gloves, Saito continues his work tirelessly.

The shelter currently houses 40 dogs and eight cats. Saito aims to expand the facility to accommodate approximately 300 dogs by 2028, seeking public funds to achieve this goal.

He states he has "never been in better spirits".

His inspiring story has garnered widespread online attention, with many netizens expressing their admiration and support for his selfless endeavour.
