Zoo Negara has announced plans to introduce two exciting new species, Komodo dragons and birds of paradise, in a move to diversify its animal collection and attract more visitors from both Malaysia and abroad
According to FMT, deputy president Rosly Lana said the proposal is still in its early stages and involves formal discussions between the Malaysian and Indonesian governments, as the exchange of animals requires bilateral approval.
"We have to apply through the Malaysian government, and approval must also come from Indonesia. The discussions are still ongoing," he said, noting that the initiative follows efforts to revitalise the zoo after its giant pandas were returned to China two years ago.

Zoo Negara currently houses over 4,000 animals across more than 300 species, including fan favourites like the Malayan tiger, giraffe, hippopotamus, tapir, and African lion
The national zoo also famously hosted two giant pandas, Fu Wa and Feng Yi, under the Giant Panda Conservation Programme — a partnership between Malaysia and China to commemorate 40 years of diplomatic relations.
After 11 years in Malaysia, the pandas were returned to China in May this year.
If approved, the arrival of Komodo dragons and birds of paradise could mark a new era for Zoo Negara, enhancing its reputation as a key hub for wildlife education and regional conservation.
