An 18-year-old who had just started working died in an accident at a construction site in Penang on Wednesday, 28 May

According to Sin Chew Daily, the accident occurred at around 4pm when the victim drove a pickup truck to Penang Science Park to collect goods.

He parked his vehicle next to a construction site. Just as he opened the back door to pick up the goods, a lorry approaching from behind struck him.

An ambulance was called, but medical officers pronounced him dead upon arrival at the scene.

China Press reported that the police have arrested the gravel truck driver.

Speaking to reporters, the victim's parents said he chose to enter the workforce as a project coordinator after graduating from secondary school

The parents said the victim was their eldest child and had two younger sisters.

"My son started working at Penang Science Park in February this year. He and his colleagues rented a house near the workplace because of the job," China Press quoted them as saying.

The parents travelled overnight from Johor and arrived at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital yesterday morning, 29 May, to arrange their son's funeral.

The victim had told his family his plans to continue studies in the future but had not yet decided on a major.

The father said his son was filial and had travelled back to Johor three times since he started working.

The deceased's body was transported back to his hometown in Johor on Thursday for a five-day wake, with the funeral scheduled for this Sunday, 1 June, reported Sin Chew Daily.
