An animal rights group has called on the authorities to investigate a viral video showing a young man abusing a chained monkey

Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) shared the video on its social media platforms, condemning the incident believed to have taken place in Kelantan.

"SAFM has received multiple complaints regarding a video circulating online that shows a monkey being chained, slapped, and kicked until it is in pain.

"We urge the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) to take immediate action," it said.

In the video, a young man can be seen slapping a monkey and throwing it onto the ground several times while other men are heard cheering him on. The animal appeared increasingly subdued as the abuse continued.

SAFM reminded the public that animal cruelty is a serious offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010

Under Section 86, offenders face fines of up to RM100,000, imprisonment for up to three years, or both.

"We call on witnesses or anyone with information about this case to come forward to assist with investigations," it added.

The organisation said it will continue monitoring to ensure authorities act firmly and swiftly so that justice is served.
