Starting 1 September 2025, drivers will only have a 10-minute grace period to pick up or drop off passengers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA)

In a statement on 30 August, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) announced that it will begin a trial run of a new Vehicle Access Management System (VAMS) at Level 5 (departures) and Level 3 (arrivals) of KLIA Terminal 1.

The system introduces timed entry and exit via barrier gates to prevent unauthorised or prolonged stops at the kerbside.

MAHB said the system aims to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and provide travellers with smoother access to the terminal.

The trial at Terminal 1 will run until 30 November 2025. The system will also be introduced to Terminal 2 from 15 September, in a trial run until 30 November.

During the trial phase, VAMS will be monitoring traffic flow, driver behaviour, and system performance to determine the optimal grace period to implement

According to MAHB, no penalty fees will be imposed during the trial period, though they are being considered for future enforcement.

A photo shared on Facebook shows a new sign at KLIA Terminal 1, highlighting the 10-minute limit and a fine of up to RM100 for overstaying.

The initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce waiting times, especially during peak travel hours

"Airports worldwide are adopting smarter kerbside management to reduce congestion and elevate the passenger experience. At KLIA, our goal is to create a safer, more efficient, and passenger-friendly environment," said MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani.

"The terminal is often travellers' first and final impression of Malaysia, and we want that to reflect our hospitality and efficiency, particularly as we prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026," he added.
