A wedding celebration in Kuala Krai was cut short when a suspension bridge snapped, sending over 50 guests plummeting into the water

The incident occurred at the Sungai Chatel Damai in Lata Rek, Pahang, on 1 January 2026, as the groom's party was attempting to leave the venue.

Lata Rek sub-district head Mohd Zaki Saari reported that the collapse happened at about 2 pm.

According to the New Straits Times, the bridge gave way as the group from Pasir Puteh crossed paths with arriving guests from the bride's side.

Among the victims, one man suffered a fractured leg after landing on river rocks, while a young child required stitches for a head injury

Three other individuals were treated for minor injuries and breathing difficulties following the fall.

Mohd Zaki explained that the bridge serves as the primary access route for residents of five nearby houses, though it is intended only for pedestrians and motorcycles.

He noted that the structure had undergone several repairs in the past to maintain its safety for daily use.

While an alternative route exists, residents find it difficult to use, as it is located significantly further away.

Manek Urai assemblyman Fauzi Abdullah visited the scene yesterday and confirmed that the collapsed bridge will be repaired immediately to restore access

Initial inspections revealed that the anchoring cables embedded in the concrete were worn out and required total replacement.

"This issue will be brought to the relevant authorities to secure immediate funding for repair work," Mohd Zaki said.
