A TikTok video is making the rounds after it cheekily connected the rempit culture with the government's latest announcement on the targeted RON95 fuel subsidy
The clip, filmed at night at a petrol station, shows a group of young men on their kapcai bikes pulling off wheelies and revving their engines.
It looks like a usual late-night gathering of stunt riders, except the video creator spliced it with a headline from Newswav that read:
MOF: Rakyat tiada lesen memandu, tidak layak subsidi RON95 (MOF: Citizens without a driving license are not eligible for the RON95 subsidy)
At the bottom, another line of text asks sarcastically in Bahasa Melayu, "Kenapa Rempit Protest?" ("Why are Rempits protesting?)
The video plays on the stereotype that many in the rempit scene ride without valid licenses, and under the new rule, they won't qualify for subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre
While the video itself might be a joke, the reaction online has been sharp, with many using it as an outlet to vent their frustrations.
One Redditor pointed out how misinformation is already spreading, "There was a community post made by Awani on YouTube today about the government saying that those with an expired license that is longer than three years are not valid for the subsidy… yet the comments are full of people saying the govt wants to make life difficult. Where's the logic?"
Others took aim directly at the rempit scene itself, saying, "Rempit proud to be rempit. I really cannot brain", "No money for licenses. But money for modifying your motor," and "It's like criminals angry at the authority".
Some mocked the bravado, "A lot of them genuinely think they're real badass, like those Harley Davidson biker gangs in the US. Except they're riding shitty mosquito bikes and act like kids."
And plenty didn't mince words about enforcement, urging authorities to "lock them all up" for "literally telling us they openly drive without licenses".
