A video has gone viral on social media showing a man attempting to use RM30,000 in counterfeit banknotes to purchase jewellery at a gold shop in Kuala Terengganu on 18 December
The video, shared by the gold shop on TikTok, shows a man wearing a white kopiah, black sunglasses, and a pink face mask trying to make the purchase. However, staff grew suspicious and managed to foil the attempt.
CCTV footage captured the man fleeing in a dark blue Perodua Axia, while shop staff inspect the fake banknotes he left behind, some scattered on the ground.
The shop warned other businesses to remain cautious when handling transactions.

Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor confirmed that a police report was lodged by a 36-year-old male sales assistant at 6.31pm on the same day
According to Berita Harian, police said the suspect, believed to be in his early 30s, acted alone and approached the gold shop along Jalan Chabang Tiga at about 3.10pm.
"Initial information indicated that the suspect stated his intention to purchase jewellery worth approximately RM30,000," Azli said.
He added that the suspect took photos of the jewellery, claiming they were for his wife, and after entering and exiting the premises twice, expressed his intention to proceed with the purchase.
"During the preparation of the purchase receipt, the sales assistant asked the individual to hand over the money for counting," he said.
However, staff noticed the cash was bundled in a yellow plastic bag, and initial checks revealed suspicious white edges on the banknotes
When the sales assistant attempted to inspect the money more closely, a brief scuffle ensued.
The suspect then became aggressive and fled the scene in a vehicle parked in front of the shop.

Azli said the suspect escaped in a dark blue Perodua Axia bearing the registration number BHA 4371, which was later found to be fake
Police said investigations are ongoing and the suspect remains at large.
The case is being investigated under Section 489B of the Penal Code.
