A peckish wild elephant recently strolled into a grocery store in Thailand after ambling over from a nearby national park, helping himself to food on the shelves

A video of the incident, which occurred on Monday, 2 June, shows the huge male elephant, known as Plai Biang Lek, briefly pausing outside the shop, situated beside a main road near the Khao Yai National Park in northeastern Thailand, before carefully manoeuvring his massive body through the entrance.

Once inside, the elephant positioned itself in front of the shop's counter, peacefully grabbing and munching on snacks

It remained unfazed as national park workers tried in vain to shoo it away.

The elephant eventually backed out of the store, still clutching a bag of snacks in its trunk. It caused minimal damage, leaving behind only muddy tracks on the floor and ceiling.

The shop owner was amused by the elephant's antics

In a separate video, the owner, Kamploy Kakaew, appeared amused as she recounted the elephant's visit, noting that it had eaten about nine bags of sweet rice crackers, a sandwich, and some dried bananas she had bought that morning.

Danai Sookkanthachat, a volunteer park worker familiar with the elephant, said the animal was a common sight in the area and has a history of entering homes in search of food, though this was the first time he'd seen it enter a grocery store.

He told the Associated Press that after leaving the shop, the elephant even proceeded to open a bedroom window of another house.
