In 2024, one vehicle stood out not for performance or design — but for its overwhelming presence in road accident statistics

The Perodua Myvi, long celebrated as the "King of Malaysian Roads", topped the list of vehicles most frequently involved in accidents, with 24,628 insurance claims filed, according to the New Straits Times.

"This is not just a claim; it is based on statistics: 24,628 Perodua Myvi were involved in accidents, followed by the Proton Saga with 16,159 and the Honda City with 13,388," said Mas Tina Abdul Hamid, coordinator at the Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC).

These numbers were shared during a briefing tied to the soft launch of VTAREC's 2025 public awareness campaign on vehicle theft and road accidents.

The data, sourced from insurance industry records, highlights a notable trend among the most commonly driven vehicles

Motorcycle statistics show a similar pattern of concentration.

The Yamaha 135LC was the most involved bike in accidents in 2024, logging close to 3,000 incidents. Close behind was the Yamaha Y15ZR with 2,154 cases.

Together, the Yamaha 135LC and Y15ZR accounted for about 30% of all motorcycle accidents in 2024

In total, Malaysia recorded 266,716 accidents in 2024.

Private car accidents led the chart at 229,739 cases, followed by 21,828 involving commercial vehicles and 15,149 involving motorcycles.

However, it's important to note that the Perodua Myvi and Proton Saga are the two most popular cars in the country, meaning they are statistically more likely to be involved in road accidents. Similarly, the Yamaha Y15ZR ranks among the most popular motorcycles, raising its likelihood of appearing in accident reports.
