A couple from the US drew criticism after posting a video of themselves sleeping overnight at Singapore's Changi Airport to avoid "astronomical" hotel prices during the recent Formula One (F1) weekend

The woman, who goes by the handle @sheridan.tate8 on TikTok, shared that hotels near the airport cost around USD400 (about RM1,700) a night.

This was double the usual average of under USD200 (about RM850), she said.

After a difficult search for a place to rest, the couple settled in Terminal 1's Arrival Garden, which they dubbed "the sleeper village", as at least 30 other people were also sleeping there

They laid out blankets and slept on inflatable neck pillows.

While she admitted it "was not the best night's sleep", she celebrated the fact that they "did not have to pay for a hotel".

However, her video prompted backlash from Singaporeans

One commenter claimed travellers were tarnishing the airport's image, noting, "Soon Changi Airport will not be No 1 any more because there are many people treating it like their bedroom."

Changi Airport, which has been named the world's best for 13 years running, is known for its extensive facilities, including two cinemas and an indoor rock-climbing wall.

Others suggested the couple should have used the airport's free napping lounges instead.
