Many households are watching their electricity usage a little more closely, and TNB's financial update for Q3 2025 has indicated that its Time of Use (ToU) feature is quickly becoming one of the tools people rely on to manage costs

The ToU option, introduced for domestic users in July 2025, allows households to shift some of their electricity usage to off-peak hours, where rates are lower. According to TNB, over 70,000 customers have already switched, with enquiries rising across its service channels.

TNB also highlighted the progress of its national smart meter rollout, which it sees as essential for customers who want clearer visibility of their consumption patterns

As of September 2025, the utility reports 5,081,063 smart meters installed across Malaysian homes .

Smart meters provide real-time usage data, which TNB says can help households make more informed decisions, especially if they're on ToU or trying to track daily consumption.

TNB says customers are still benefiting from rebates under the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) mechanism

According to the company, households have collectively saved more than RM250 million to date through AFA rebates.

The utility adds that the mechanism allows it to recover fuel costs more efficiently while maintaining cash flow stability.

Additionally, more people are using the myTNB app, while EV charging infrastructure continues to expand

TNB reports that 7.1 million customers, which equals roughly 70% of its user base, now have the myTNB app.

On the electric vehicle (EV) front, TNB says the build-out of charging infrastructure is moving steadily alongside the government's broader EV roadmap.

By September 2025, the country recorded 5,109 charge points installed, with year-to-date usage supplying 10GWh of electricity and generating approximately RM5.1 million in revenue from charging operations.

For the nine-month period of 2025, TNB recorded earnings of RM3.2 billion, in line with market expectations for the year's first three quarters

According to the utility, the performance was driven by:

  • Higher overall electricity demand
  • Stronger sales across commercial and other customer segments
  • Reduced net finance costs
  • A foreign exchange gain of RM350 million from the ringgit strengthening to RM4.215/USD (from RM4.471/USD in December 2024)

Electricity demand continued trending upward, with total sales reaching 99,930GWh as of September.

TNB also confirmed continuous investments into grid reliability, digital infrastructure, and operational response

In Q3 2025 alone, the company invested RM3.1 billion, forming part of a cumulative RM8.3 billion capital expenditure for the year.

The company noted improvements in the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) — down to 46.65 minutes from 47.62 minutes — indicating fewer or shorter outages for consumers.
