Johari said police received the report on 26 February.

The cemetery management told the police that it later received a WhatsApp call from an international number

The caller allegedly claimed to be in possession of the missing urns and demanded a ransom for their return.

Police are currently investigating the case under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, Section 384 for extortion, and Section 297 for trespassing in burial places.

Johari added that police are also working with relevant agencies to obtain technical assistance to trace the communication network used and identify the suspect.

Following the incident, the memorial park issued a statement confirming the theft and said an internal investigation is underway

The management also said affected families have been personally contacted and informed of the situation.

"We understand the concerns and unease among the affected families and the public, and we deeply regret the distress this may cause.

"We have taken various measures to address the incident and conducted a comprehensive review of all relevant processes to safeguard the families' interests," the statement said.

Earlier this month, Johor police also confirmed they are investigating the suspected theft of more than 20 urns from a memorial park in Kulai. However, no ransom demand was reported in that case.
