Typhoon Hato's strong gusts that reached more than 120km per hour, have flooded the streets, uprooted trees, and damaged scores of buildings.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled, trading in financial markets is suspended and schools and most businesses there have been closed.
While Hong Kong suffers regular tropical storms between July – October, Typhoon Hato that has so far killed three people is by far the worst.
According to the Hong Kong Observatory, Hato brought maximum sustained winds of up to 172kmph and gusts of up to 224kmph
As these photos show, strong winds and waves caused significant damage all around, and while people were warned to stay indoors, not all heeded the warnings.
