Thai police have on Wednesday, 9 April, arrested a Malaysian man suspected of robbing a gold jewellery shop in Hat Yai

According to Bernama, 6th Police Investigation Division acting chief Pol Col Anusorn Thongsai said the suspect, who allegedly committed the robbery on Tuesday, 8 April, was arrested while attempting to flee to his son's home in Nonthaburi, Bangkok.

"Initial investigations found that the suspect took a bus from Hat Yai to Mochit bus station in Bangkok, before trying to take a taxi to his son's house.

"Police officers arrested the suspect at 6.30pm local time, along with evidence such as gold, a pistol, and several live bullets," said the police chief.

Investigations showed that the suspect had acted alone, riding a motorcycle to rob a gold shop in Plaza Hat Yai at 11.50am on Tuesday

The suspect had used a pistol to scare the shop's employees, and fled with gold worth approximately 7 million baht (RM900,000).

Following the heist, Thai police issued an arrest warrant and tightened border control to prevent the suspect from escaping

According to the police, the 61-year-old has various identities, including a Thai alias, to avoid being detected.

Anusorn said the suspect is currently in remand and will face legal action.
