A 40-year-old British woman was arrested in Koh Phangan, Thailand, for allegedly conducting unlicensed 'Tantra Yoga' classes that authorities claim contained sexual content

Local tourist police detained the woman, later identified as Maria, on 5 November after receiving a tip-off.

Thai news outlet 3Plus News reported that she charged 400 baht (RM50) per introductory session, and promoted these classes online via Facebook advertisements.

When officers examined the advertisements' content, they found material concerning inappropriate sexual activities between male and female participants, who were reportedly required to pair up for the classes. After completing the initial course, participants could opt for an advanced course costing 7,440 baht (RM945) per couple.

When officers visited the location in Village 8, Koh Phangan Sub-district, they found Maria conducting a class with several foreigners present, reportedly demonstrating postures and guiding meditation.

Upon checking her work permit, officers found that Maria was officially employed as a Customer Relations Manager for a company managing residential accommodation

She admitted to organising and teaching the yoga classes, collecting fees, and sharing profits with the host restaurant. Maria had previously hosted classes at the same location on 17 October.

Authorities seized evidence, including class passes, flyers advertising "Tantra massage for couples", a notebook detailing yoga instructions, and promotional posters. Maria was charged with working outside the scope of her permitted occupation under Thailand's Emergency Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers' Employment. She was taken to Koh Phangan Police Station for further investigation.

Police said the arrest was part of a wider effort to monitor foreign-led activities that could "risk sexual indecency" and harm Thailand's tourism image. Maria remains in custody as the investigation into the nature of her yoga sessions continues.
