A 35-year-old man was caught on video dragging his pet dog along the road while riding his motorcycle in the Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima

The footage, which captured the incident at approximately 2.35pm on 8 April, shows the man named Pannawit on a blue Honda MSX motorcycle with a small dog tied to the rear, reported The Bangkok Post.

A Facebook user shared videos of the man being confronted by a couple of witnesses, who later rescued the dog from Pannawit and took it for veterinary care.

One woman, Ms Ice, was on her way to pick up her child from school when she spotted the man. She initially thought Pannawit was making the dog exercise.

She recounted how the the 5-month-old dog, Salmon, tried to keep up with the motorcycle, but could no longer do so once the man began to accelerate. Salmon was dragged across the asphalt for over 600m.

Unable to bear the sight, Ms Ice manoeuvred her SUV in front of the motorcycle, forcing Pannawit to stop.

Ms Ice described Pannawit as acting erratically, claiming he was the dog's owner. He said he did it so everyone would see it and would hate him, Thairath reported.

"We cursed at him and threatened to report him for animal cruelty, but he told me to go ahead. He then insisted on taking the dog back but I refused, chasing him away," she said.

The dog was trembling and bleeding profusely from deep wounds.

However, a more horrifying discovery was made: this wasn't the first instance of abuse.

Disturbingly, the veterinarian found both old and fresh wounds, indicating a likely history of prior mistreatment.

Salmon received treatment for his injuries, including abrasions on all four paws and his body. The veterinarian noted he was probably in severe pain and at risk of developing a fever.

The video of the incident quickly spread widely on social media, catching the attention of the Watchdog Thailand Foundation. They subsequently filed a complaint against Pannawit, which led to his arrest.

After receiving treatment, the rescued dog was offered for adoption and was renamed Nong Tai.

Nong Tai found a loving home with a new owner. While initially showing signs of trauma, such as trembling at night, Nong Tai reportedly recovered quickly in his new home.

Pannawit was fined 10,000 baht (approximately RM1,314.60) for animal abuse

The Sikhiu Provincial Court quickly issued an initial fine of 20,000 baht (around RM2,629.26) for Pannawit's animal cruelty. This fine was later halved to 10,000 baht after he confessed to the charges. He was not sentenced to any prison time.

When questioned by the police, Pannawit confessed that he had a fight with his boyfriend before the incident and had intentionally harmed Salmon to retaliate against his partner.
