A 51-year-old food delivery rider in Thailand fell ill after discovering a dead house gecko hidden in his meal

The incident, shared on Facebook on Friday, 16 January, has sparked concerns over street food hygiene after the rider fell seriously ill.

While picking up his girlfriend from work, the rider, known as Suthep, purchased a popular breakfast staple — sticky rice with fermented pork — from a busy roadside stall.

He had almost finished the meal at home when he noticed a small, black object in the rice.

Initially mistaking it for mould, he and his girlfriend were horrified to discover that it was actually a dead house gecko.

The psychological shock immediately manifested into physical symptoms

According to Thai news outlet Naewna, Suthep began vomiting immediately after the discovery and suffered intense diarrhoea for five hours, from 7am until noon, leaving him physically exhausted.

He sought medical attention and was prescribed anti-nausea medication, rehydration salts, and given sick leave from work.

Despite his ordeal, Suthep decided not to take legal action against the vendors, citing pity for the shop owners

However, he intends to visit the stall to inform them of the incident so they can improve their cleanliness.

He also issued a public warning, urging consumers to be more vigilant when purchasing street food and calling on health agencies to conduct more frequent, random hygiene inspections.

The stall in question is reportedly a very popular spot, especially during the morning rush, highlighting the potential risk to a large number of customers.
