Tensions in the Gulf of Oman have surged following drone strikes launched by Iranian forces against US vessels in retaliation for the seizure of an Iranian cargo ship
The incident unfolded after US military personnel intercepted, fired upon, and boarded the Iran-flagged container ship Touska, an action Tehran has denounced as "maritime piracy" and a violation of a two-week ceasefire mediated by Pakistan that has been largely observed since 7 April, as reported by Bernama.
According to reports from semi-official news agencies Tasnim and Fars, the Iranian military command said US forces targeted the vessel, disabled its navigation systems, and boarded it
Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaghari confirmed that US forces opened fire on the ship before boarding it with "terrorist Marines". Ship tracking data indicates that the Touska had departed from Port Klang in Malaysia on 12 April.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the incident, stating that the USS Spruance intercepted the Iranian-flagged cargo vessel for allegedly attempting to violate US naval sanctions in the Gulf of Oman.
CENTCOM released video footage via social media showing US warships issuing warnings before firing on the vessel, and officials confirmed that Marines are currently holding the ship, which was en route to Bandar Abbas, Iran.
Iranian officials have responded aggressively, with Zolfaghari warning that the Iranian military would retaliate immediately against what they described as "armed piracy" by the US
This escalation poses a significant challenge to the ceasefire agreement that had been in place since early April.
