A teacher has expressed his disappointment after his students scored below 10% in their English exams, with one not even getting a single mark

In a Threads post on Monday, 27 October, Mohamad Huzaid Haris shared three photos of his students' exam papers, which scored 9%, 5%, and 0%, respectively.

"I don't know. Maybe I am not fit to be an English teacher," the teacher lamented.

Mohamad Huzaid left personal remarks on each paper, hoping his words would resonate with them.

"This result is unacceptable for your level. No more excuses, just effort," he wrote on the paper that scored 9%.

"At least try," read the remark on the paper that scored 5%, while the one that got 0% said, "Very poor. School is not a place to play. You need to work hard."

Speaking to SAYS, Mohamad Huzaid said he has been teaching the Form 1 students for the past 10 months, and some of them for over two years since their time in Remove class

He added that none of the students left their exam papers completely blank, not even the student who scored 0%.

"Most of their answers did not address the question, and some sections, like the essay portion, were left blank.

"One of the questions they couldn't answer was 'Write an email to your friend', even though I have explained the answering method and the format required for this type of writing many, many times.

"When I returned the papers, their reaction was rather calm. Some even laughed, treating it as a joke," the teacher said.

Huzaid admitted that he had mixed feelings while marking the papers. Although he was disappointed, he acknowledged that the results reflected the reality of his students' language proficiency.

The experience, however, has only strengthened his resolve to help them improve.

"I want to emphasise that the intention of my post was not to belittle the students, but to show the real challenges teachers face in language education today.

"This is just a small fraction of what teachers face every day," he shared.

His post resonated with many other teachers and parents who shared similar experiences.

One fellow educator wrote, "I once left a note on a student's paper. Then a parent messaged me angrily, saying I had disturbed their child's emotions. The note I wrote was: 'We did this multiple times, but you still choose to leave it blank? You won't get anywhere with this kind of attitude!' The parent then sent me an essay-like message. Then I replied, 'Perhaps if you taught your child how to write a long essay like this, your child would be excellent.' That parent has blocked me ever since."

Meanwhile, a parent shared, "It's the same as with my child's teacher. They said many students did not answer the exam. I was worried that my child [might be one of them]. Luckily, they said it wasn't my child, and my child passed the exam. My child is not an excellent student, but I always remind them not to leave a single space blank. Just try to answer."
