SPM Student Arrested For Drug Use After Attending Songkran Festival In Thailand

His elder sister said she did not expect to be screened upon returning to Malaysia.

A Form Five student and his elder sister were arrested for drug use at a roadblock at the Kedah immigration complex after returning from a Songkran festival in Dannok, Thailand

According to the New Straits Times, the siblings were detained by the Kedah National Anti-Drugs Agency (NADA) during a roadblock at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex yesterday, 12 April.

The 21-year-old woman tested positive for ketamine, methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), and methamphetamine, while the SPM candidate tested positive for ketamine.

The woman told authorities that they had travelled from their home in Kuala Perlis to Dannok by motorcycle on Saturday, 11 April, to attend the Songkran celebrations.

"We went to Thailand specifically for Songkran. It was our first time trying drugs there, which we smoked in cigarettes," she said.

She added that she did not expect to be screened upon returning to Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the 17-year-old teen admitted that to being influenced by friends to try the substances

Kedah NADA director Md Razif Wan said the operation, which ran from Saturday morning until Sunday evening, was carried out following intelligence that many Malaysians were crossing the border to visit entertainment outlets in Dannok.

During the operation, authorities inspected 25 cars and 35 motorcycles, screening a total of 47 individuals.

"Out of those, 37 tested positive for illicit substances. This included 17 for ketamine, 14 for MDMA, four for methamphetamine, and two for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)," he said at a press conference.

Razif added that those detained were aged between 17 and 46, with most believed to be first-time users who had taken drugs recreationally.

All the suspects are being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

He also said authorities arrested another 17-year-old at around 11pm on Saturday as part of the same operation.
