In a first for Malaysia, 413,372 candidates are sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2025 examination from 3 November to 23 December without ever sitting for any major exams

The current Form 5 cohort is the first in the history of the country to have never taken the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan 3 (PT3).

The USPR examinations were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and officially abolished the following year.

Meanwhile, PT3 was cancelled in 2021 and officially abolished in 2022.

Both UPSR and PT3 were abolished under then education minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin

The reason for the abolition was to implement the School-Based Assessment (PBS) approach, while allowing teachers the freedom to teach in innovative and creative ways.

It was also part of the then government's plans to strengthen the national education system.

SPM began on Monday, 3 November, with 3,350 centres nationwide conducting the examination

The examinations began with the Bahasa Melayu oral test that ends on 6 November. It'll be followed by the English oral test from 10 to 13 November. Both subjects will also have a listening test which will take place on 20 November.

Meanwhile, the Science practical test is scheduled for 17 to 19 November.

From 25 November to 23 December, the candidates will sit for the written examinations.

127,526 examination personnel have been appointed to ensure the exams run smoothly.
