The Petaling Jaya Sessions Court today, 7 April, has reviewed several distressing WhatsApp messages from two phones seized in connection with the death of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin

According to the New Straits Times, ASP Mohd Zaidi Abu Hassan, an analyst from the police's digital forensic department, was the 25th prosecution witness testifying today in the trial against Zayn Rayyan's parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, both 30.

It is understood that Mohd Zaidi was tasked with inspecting the phones to extract any videos, messages, and images that had been deleted.

He said the WhatsApp conversation between "Baby Sayang" and "Manja" was retrieved from an iPhone's iCloud storage registered under the name "Ismanira" and a Huawei phone registered under the name "Zaim Ikhwan Zahari" in a Google account.

However, when deputy public prosecutor Nur Sabrina Zubairi asked who the phones belonged to, Mohd Zaidi said he could not be sure.

Zayn Rayyan was found dead on 6 December 2023 on a sandbank in a stream near Block R, Apartment Idaman in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya.

Here are some of the messages found in the phones and their respective dates:
– 20 June 2023: "So stressful, I feel like killing someone"
– 20 June 2023: "Have to beat them up, I cannot even rest"

– 11 October 2023: "So stressed with Zayn"

Mohd Zaidi said he used an XRY device, a digital forensics and mobile device forensics tool, to extract the deleted messages

"This method is to ensure the exhibits (handphones) are in good condition. Then, I connected the cables and began analysing.

"After completing the analysis, I transferred it into HTML. I had used the computer in my office and only I had access to it," he said in his witness statement.

Zaim and Ismanira pleaded not guilty to the amended charge of Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for child neglect that could lead to physical or emotional injury, which is read along with Section 34 of the Penal Code.

The couple was accused of committing the offence between 12pm on 5 December 2023 and 9.55pm on 6 December 2023 in the vicinity of Apartment Idaman and a nearby stream.
