For years, scientists believed sloths did not fart. A recent video, however, has shattered this long-held assumption.

Previously, scientists theorised that the methane from their sluggish digestive systems was absorbed into their bloodstreams and exhaled.

However, a recent video is proving that these slow-moving tree dwellers are actually incredibly gassy.

The footage, shared by British zoologist Lucy Cooke and wildlife veterinarian Andrés Sáenz Bräutigam in Costa Rica, shows a baby two-toed sloth farting while in a water bath

This video, posted on Instagram on 15 July, marks the first visual evidence of a farting sloth.

"Yes, sloths do fart," Cooke confirmed, adding she was not surprised at the revelation.

Speaking to Live Science, Bräutigam, who has studied sloths for over a decade at the Toucan Rescue Ranch in Costa Rica, added that sloths are surprisingly gassy.

The extent of their gas production is notable, posing challenges in veterinary studies.

"If you work with sloths you live with their gas, everywhere on X-rays, interfering with ultrasounds, it can actually be a huge concern," Bräutigam explained

He noted that sloths can use their stomach gas to float when in water.

This unexpected discovery provides a humorous and insightful look into the physiology of these animals, proving that even the most serene ones have their gassy moments.
