Police have apprehended a man and a woman following the circulation of a viral video depicting individuals setting off fireworks from a moving car in Shah Alam
The arrests were made yesterday, 29 March, after the footage sparked widespread concern among social media users regarding public safety and reckless behaviour on the road, according to the New Straits Times.
The incident reportedly took place in the vicinity of Persiaran Ficus, Section U15, where an individual was seen standing through the sunroof of a vehicle while discharging pyrotechnics into the air.
Shah Alam district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ramsay Embol confirmed that the suspects, aged 21 and 28, were picked up by authorities at 2.40pm
The arrests were carried out in two separate locations — Sungai Buloh and Section 9, Shah Alam — following a police report lodged shortly after the video began trending online.
FMT also reported that a Proton Satria believed to have been used during the stunt was seized by the authorities, along with two mobile phones and a firework stick that investigators suspect was the primary device used in the incident.
The suspects have been remanded for three days until Tuesday, 31 March, to facilitate a thorough investigation into the matter
Under the Explosives Act 1957, the illegal discharge of fireworks or the possession of prohibited pyrotechnics can result in significant fines or imprisonment, depending on the severity of the endangerment to the public.
Ramsay reiterated that the authorities would not tolerate any form of behaviour that jeopardises the safety of other road users
He urged the public to refrain from engaging in dangerous activities for the sake of digital popularity, noting that the police are constantly monitoring social media platforms for such violations.
If the suspects are found guilty of endangering the lives of others through reckless conduct, they may also face scrutiny under the Road Transport Act 1987, which addresses the dangerous operation of motor vehicles.
