Sarawak Considering ‘Grab Sampan’ To Modernise River-Crossing Services

The Sarawak government is currently reviewing a proposal from e-hailing giant Grab to introduce sampan services along the Sarawak River in Kuching
According to The Borneo Post, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the pilot project, called the 'Grab Sampan Proof of Concept', aims to modernise long-standing river-crossing services.
They plan to integrate electric-propulsion sampans with digital booking and cashless systems.
"This initiative embraces innovation while honouring tradition, using electric propulsion and digital platforms to enhance first- and last-mile connectivity along the Sarawak River," he said during the 2025 Sarawak Rivers Day Conference in Kuching on Sunday, 16 November.

Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin added that his ministry, together with the Sarawak Rivers Board, will study the pilot project to ensure its feasibility and alignment with wider transport goals.
"This project exemplifies how innovation and digitalisation can rejuvenate traditional river transport, creating sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions for the people of Sarawak," he said.
