Retired police and military personnel could soon be appointed as full-time wardens in MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) boarding schools to help address rampant bullying among students

MARA chairperson Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the idea was among several discussed with MARA director-general Datuk Zulfikri Osman in a recent meeting aimed at tackling disciplinary issues.

He suggested that these wardens be appointed on a contract basis, with candidates undergoing interviews and comprehensive assessments, reported the New Straits Times.

"These wardens can be selected through an interview process and holistic evaluation from among retired police or army officers. The important thing is they must be capable of instilling discipline and closely monitoring students' personal and character development," he said in a Facebook comment.

The proposal came in the wake of a bullying incident involving MRSM students, which gained widespread attention after a video went viral

The one-minute clip showed a student in Penang being physically attacked by a group of boys on a bed, including being hit with a belt.

According to Asyraf, seven students were confirmed to have taken part in the bullying, while five others were found to be accomplices. All seven main perpetrators have been expelled from the boarding school.
