Proton has reportedly ended production of the Saga at its Shah Alam 'legacy' plant after more than 40 years, with operations relocating to Perak

The national automaker has long planned to relocate all operations to Tanjung Malim, with Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad stating in April 2023 that the move will be completed by 2027, reported the New Straits Times.

In July last year, the company announced a RM253 million expansion project at its Tanjung Malim plant to add two new stamping facilities — factories that transform flat metal sheets into various shapes — and confirmed that Saga production would be relocated there.

Known as Proton City, the Tanjung Malim plant is expected to attract a total investment of RM32 billion, pledged by Proton-Geely senior leaders in China during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's visit two years ago.

Saarani said about 7,000 Proton employees and 21,000 of their family members are expected to move to the new city.

The 404.7-hectare mega project will be developed into a next-generation vehicle hub and is expected to generate tens of thousands of job opportunities for local youths.

Proton employees recently shared on social media that Saga production has ended at the Shah Alam plant

According to car marketplace Caricarz, one employee revealed that the final Saga unit rolled off the assembly line last Friday, 26 September.

SAYS has reached out to Proton for confirmation but has not received an immediate response.

The post went viral with over 1,400 shares, as netizens looked back on the factory's beginnings in 1983.

Proton launched the first Proton Saga in July 1985 at the Shah Alam plant, where thousands of workers cleared land and built brand-new facilities, laying the foundations of Malaysia's automotive industry.

In a Facebook post last year, the automaker said most of its production had shifted to Tanjung Malim and reaffirmed its aspiration to remain the engine driving Malaysia's automotive industry forward.
