A horrific murder-suicide has shocked Tokyo during the height of the children's spring break season, leaving a young retail worker and her assailant dead
On 26 March, a female employee at the renowned Pokémon Center in Ikebukuro district was fatally stabbed in a busy commercial complex — a site usually synonymous with family-friendly tourism and vibrant youth culture.
The attack, which occurred at about 7.16pm, unfolded in front of dozens of terrified shoppers and tourists.

The victim, a store clerk in her 20s, was stabbed in the neck by a man of a similar age
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, the perpetrator wielded knives in both hands during the assault and immediately turned one on himself after the assault.
Emergency responders rushed both individuals to a nearby hospital, but they were pronounced dead within an hour.

Disturbing details have since emerged regarding events leading up to the violence
The Asahi Shimbun reported that the victim had previously filed police complaints alleging stalking.
This suggests the attack was likely a targeted act of gender-based violence rather than a random outburst, reigniting national debate over the protection of stalking victims and the adequacy of police intervention.
Witnesses present described a scene of pandemonium
At the time, the store was crowded with over 100 customers, including many young children. One witness recalled the sound of display shelves being knocked over, followed by the victim's desperate screams for help. Social media footage showed shoppers fleeing as ambulances converged on the site.
In response, The Pokémon Company announced that the Ikebukuro store and its adjacent "Pikachu Sweets" cafe would remain closed until further notice.
The company issued a statement on its website prioritising the mental and physical wellbeing of its staff while pledging full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
