Several cities, like New York City and Makati City, have already gathered and celebrated, leading to today's event
In New York City's Time Square, yogis transformed the famous intersection in one of the world's busiest cities into a huge outdoor yoga lesson surrounded by cars, construction and the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, according to [NDTV] (http://www.ndtv.com/world-news/thousands-of-yogis-hit-times-square-to-welcome-summer-1421437).

In Makati City, about 100 Filipino yogis took part in a mass yoga exercise demonstration on 18 June at the Ayala Triangle park to mark the second edition of International Yoga Day, an EPA journalist reported, according to [Vida Latina] (http://www.vidalatinasd.com/news/2016/jun/18/filipino-yoga-devotees-take-part-in-international/).
Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in India and aims to transform the body and mind
According to the website of [IDY] (http://idayofyoga.org), the declaration of this event came after the call for the adoption of 21 June as International Day of Yoga by Honorable Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014, wherein he stated: "*Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise, but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature*."
