Pet retail chain Pets Wonderland has announced plans to phase out the sale of cats and dogs across all its outlets in Malaysia, starting with its Mid Valley KL branch by the end of August

In a statement issued on 1 August, the company said the transition would be fully implemented by the end of 2025, or earlier if operationally feasible, to ensure the pets can be rehomed responsibly and compassionately.

The decision, it said, follows "thoughtful reflection and extensive dialogue with customers, animal welfare organisations, and internal teams".

The company said the move is a significant change, as it marks a meaningful step towards a kinder and more ethical pet industry.

The announcement comes a day after Pets Wonderland released a separate update on 31 July addressing concerns raised about its animal welfare practices

In the statement, the company said it took further action following an inspection by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), and that licensed veterinarians had confirmed the dogs were in good health and condition.

"We are implementing a comprehensive internal review that ensures our operations and care practices remain aligned with leading animal welfare principles," it said, adding that it remains committed to "listening, improving, and acting responsibly".

This wave of scrutiny began last month after a concerned Malaysian shared footage of several seemingly malnourished puppies at Pets Wonderland's Mid Valley outlet

The images, widely circulated on social media, sparked public criticism and raised questions about the company's animal care standards.

A screenshot shows Pets Wonderland responding to a concerned citizen about the incident, saying DVS had inspected the animals and confirmed they met the required condition scores.

"DVS didn't issue any findings as they found the [dogs] are fine. You can call DVS KL to verify the case if you need to," read a message the establishment allegedly wrote to the concerned member of the public.

My Forever Doggo reported that numerous Google reviews over the years have raised concerns about animal welfare at various Pets Wonderland outlets, with many users expressing frustration over what they view as ongoing and unaddressed problems.

Several images and videos shared in the reviews showed pets confined in cages soiled with faeces, appearing visibly unwell and distressed.
